Manifesto. by Leonie Wise

Every Friday on Twitter*, I look forward to seeing who the people in my circle are recommending to follow. I thought I’d share some of that inspiration with you here as a Friendly Friday feature.

The manifesto above is by poet and photographer Leonie Wise, of New Zealand. My favorite thing about the Internet is the ability to connect with people in my creative tribe, no matter where they are on the planet.

So I was thrilled to discover Leonie’s blog today and this manifesto, which she offers free for download on her website. What an artistic act of generosity.

I’ve been cooking up a manifesto of my own for some time, about what it means to be a gorgeous genius. Stay tuned because I will be posting that in the near future.

What I love about Leonie’s manifesto is that it’s for the month of June. I’ve long been an advocate of themes for the year, but how about a theme of guiding principles for the month?

What does your manifesto for June look like? What principles do you want to be guided by? I’m going to dwell on this myself this weekend and whip up a manifesto for June.

This is a good excuse for me to play with my love of typography. I emphasize play, because as a designer, creating on demand all the time gets to be about work, work, work, usually on crazy deadlines. My pure love affair with letters, and how they are rendered into graphic statements, gets lost.

So thank you, Leonie for the poetry and photography and the manifesto. My heart is lighter for reconnecting with typographic love + a yet another way of artfully rendering a life guided by our aspirations.

Head on over to Leoni’s website to read more and get the manifesto download.

Thanks for sharing this, Lisa! I’ve retweeted it and posted it on Facebook as well.

It’s funny you should ask about how we connect. I was trying to make connections on Facebook. And by reading people’s blogs–that one has some moderate success. I hated Twitter. It didn’t make any sense to me at all.

Then on May 15 I took a class on social media for small, crafty businesses. I was introduced to the various Twitter organizers (I’m using Hootsuite, but I’ve heard Tweetdeck is good, too). And then I learned about putting people in lists and using hashtags so I can organize my Twitter feeds.

I can’t believe I didn’t like Twitter! I’ve been actively using it for about three weeks now and have found all sorts of online friends to share writing and art with. I’m following you there, too. That’s how I got to this post. :)

@Kim: I’ve heard so many stories just like yours. So glad the social media class helped you. Who taught it? Thanks for stopping by!

Lisa, the class was taught by Sister Diane, formerly of Church of Craft. Her website is CraftyPod: http://www.craftypod.com/

Leonie, I just love this manifesto – I will be posting it on my blog in the next few days (correctly attributed of course!) – I ‘m looking for simplicity, honesty and zen in my life and this certainly hit the nail on the head. I can’t wait to see what you come up with for July!

Great manifesto, Lisa. Thanks for sharing it.

One thing I’ve done recently to better connect with fellow bloggers is to edit the titles of the feeds I subscribe to. Now, the titles begin with the names of the people behind the blogs. This reminds me that I’m not just reading a blog post, but the thoughts of a flesh-and-blood human being and fellow traveler on the journey.

Thanks for all you do.

@Ken Great idea about editing the feeds. I’m going to start with yours! p.s. Everyone should be reading Ken’s blog: Mildly Creative.
