In Part 1 of this series on Goal Setting for Creatives, I introduced the annual planning process I use to create and track my goals for the coming year. Out of this planning, I create my own Strategic Planner, which is a portable, visual booklet that serves as a beautiful and practical reference of the plans I’ve made.
Part 2 shows you exactly how to design achievable goals by using a handy spreadsheet I developed.
Here, in Part 3, I’ve created a video to show you how my 2010 Strategic Planner looks so far and how to put together your own.
Here’s a list of the supplies I used to create my 2010 Strategic Planner:
Cover: created out of a greeting card. Card stock or heavy paper will work.
Inside Pages: trim about five or six pieces of paper to the same size as the card when opened flat. Fold these pages in half.
My pages are created from one piece of decorative paper, plus pages recycled from a font catalog.
Envelope: An envelope the size of one page makes a handy pocket to store other pages of writing. I create one page for each category and store them in the envelope.
Ribbon: to tie the pages together.
Paint: Tempera paint or craft paint to paint out busy background elements from recycled paper pages, or to add color if you’re using plain paper.
Glue stick, tape and ephemera: glue in photos of yourself and images that represent the theme of your year or a specific goal. Clear packing tape is used to create extra page flaps out of postcards. Just tape paper and postcard along the edge, and you’ve got a fold-out page to work on back of.
Alphabet Rubber Stamps: optional, but you know you want some.
I own dozens of alphabet stamps. And I’m OK with that. My name is Lisa Sonora, and I’m an Alphaholic….
The alphabet stamps are from my friend Traci Bunkers.
Here’s a link to her etsy shop. She’s got loads of cool stuff, not just alphabets.
I see her book, Print and Stamp Lab: 52 Ideas for Handmade, Upcycled Print Tools is available for pre-order! Congrats, Traci!
I hope you have fun creating your own Strategic Planner. If you make one, I’d love to see what you did. Feel free to post a comment below with a link to your website or Flickr gallery, or however else you share images. We all want to see!
Next week, I’ll share some tips for staying on track with what you’ve mapped out in your Strategic Planner.
Happy planning and creating, all!

Hi Lisa,
Thank you for sharing this with the world. One thing I haven’t seen yet in this tutorial is how the book and the result of the goal setting connect. do you have a way of putting those in the book (or is that coming in the next part?)
Thanks,
Tom
