Redefining “Starving” Artist

How does being a starving artist show up? Now, you’re probably not literally starving. So how does being a “starving artist” look in the creative entrepreneur’s life? It’s both a love and money thing.

1. Taking on ill-fitting jobs* because you need the money

*Ill-fitting jobs are jobs where:

  • You are not compensated fairly for your services
  • The client is mean (however you define that)
  • The client pays late and is hard to collect from (combined with the item above, that can spell disaster for the creative mindset)
  • You are working for a trade, but not getting your side of the bargain

2. Doing too many small jobs that keep you too busy to do your best, most thoughtful, work

3. Being too exhausted to have fun, and to fill your own creative well

4. Experiencing overwhelm as a regular state rather than rarely or occasionally

5. Not charging enough for your services/product

6. Feeling icky (that’s the technical term!) about the general topic of money or selling your art

7. Being in a continual state of crisis about money: erratic cash flow, poor planning, living month-to-month, living beyond one’s means
